I finally had a chance to get Don Henley's Building the Perfect Beast on CD and ripped to my computer. I listened to the CD all Wednesday and it sounds just as good as when I first bought the cassette in 1984. From "The Boys of Summer" to my favorites, " A Months of Sunday", Sunset Grill", "The Land of the Living". On this CD some of the best session musicians come out of the woodwork to help out, David Paich, Steve Porcaro(from the group Toto). I really enjoyed this album even though it's bogged down with synthesizers but hey, it was the 80's. I hope you enjoy the selections I have for you. :-)
I love his sound, I love how he enlist the "best" of the best musicians for his recording. When I got my very first stereo system with a cd player(well...actually is was a mini system with a 3 cd player) this was one of my very first compact disc I bought, Donald Fagen's Kamakiriad. To me he(Fagen) tells a story that focuses around his new vehicle...the Kamakiriad, as he describes the car...
"I was born yesterday/
When they brought my Kamakiri...
When they handed me the keys/
It's a steam-power 10
The frame is out of Glasgow
The tech is Balinese
It's not a freeway bullet...
Or a bug with monster wheels
It's a total biosphere
The farm in the back
Is hydroponic
Good, fresh things
Every day of the year"
Donald takes us along on his adventures and to me the ride, the trip, the people he encounters on his journey is pretty wild. But of course the main focus are the music arrangements....
First, I didn't know Walter Becker played bass guitar and his darn good. To me I'm pretty sure he's playing a 5string because on the tracks Trans Island Skyway and Tomorrow Girls I think I hear that low B throughout those tracks(if I'm wrong bass players out there...please let me know) and Becker doubles up on the guitar solos as well..very nice. And as always, the horn sections is always strong. I remember getting Fagen's Nightfly album and this to me is just as good. I don't know why but Donald Fagen always give me that art deco fill with his compositions.
One thing I have always enjoyed about Donald Fagen and Steely Dan's sound was how much they pay attention to clarity and great quality sound. This is why I think they didn't tour as much in the 70s because the live sound quality was not as great as when they recorded in the studio.
He I'm posting some of favorite tracks from this album. Get the album, you will not be dissappointed in the ride along with Donald in his Kamakiri.
In the up coming month I will devote a entire month to Steely Dan. To me they will always be a jazz group to me...not a pop band.
This guy from Detroit has played with countless of artist. His guitar style I can listen to hour after hour. I remember hearing Collaboration with George Benson and was like, "I didn't know the acoustic guitar could sound that cool?" This is from the album, "Peculiar Situation". Every track on this album I truly enjoy(well one track had to grow on me, "Now and Again feat. Roberta Flack...not because I do not like Ms. Flack but I with me, if I want to hear vocals I buy a vocal CD and when I wish to hear instrumental, I wish to hear all instrumental compositions...one of my pet peeves). This track is a beautiful track when you are just chillin' on a Saturday afternoon on your patio or deck.
(oh...did I mention it's on the Windham Hill Jazz Label.
)
What can I say about this guitar virtuoso that has not been said. The very first track I ever heard from him was "Clockwork"...blew me away. When it came to musical gifts God must to have been really generous to Alex. His finger picking style is just incredible. Whether he is playing solo or with a couple of people his style is his own...really. Here are some facts about this amazing guitarist. Whenever I listen to Alex he gives me a deeper respect for you, the musicians that practice and practice to perfect your gift and love for the love of acoustic music.
To all the musicians that play the acoustic guitars...Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Enjoy....
